Cooling the house without the electricity bill

Cooling the house without the electricity bill

On the coast, summer shows up on your August bill. Air conditioning cools quickly, but two split units running overnight add up, and in a lot of rooms you don’t need to go that far.

A ceiling fan uses a fraction of the electricity an air conditioning unit does. It doesn’t lower the air temperature, but it moves air across your skin, and that’s usually enough to sleep comfortably through most of the summer in the majority of bedrooms around Javea.

When a fan is enough

  • Bedrooms. This is where fans work best: you want to sleep, not chill a whole room.
  • Rooms with an existing ceiling light point. The light comes down, the fan goes up, no building work.
  • Rental properties. Cheap to run even if a guest leaves it on all day, which with a split unit gets expensive.
  • Covered terraces and porches. With an outdoor-rated model.

When it isn’t

A fan won’t replace air conditioning in mid-August in a south-facing room with poor insulation. There, having both makes sense: the air conditioning for the worst nights and the fan for the rest of the summer, which is most of it.

What’s needed

A ceiling light point and a fixing that will take the weight, reinforced if the ceiling needs it. We take the packaging and the old unit away.

If you already have one and it wobbles or rattles, it’s almost always a case of balancing the blades.
